Fuel Filters

Fuel Filters are strategically placed downstream of pumps and upstream of carburetors or injectors to remove contaminants like water, sediment, and debris from fuel. Without filtered fuel, pumps and injectors would suffer accelerated wear, clog, or completely fail. For aircraft, filters tend to be in the form of either:

  • Paper Cartridge Filters: Paper cartridge filters are used for finer filtration, constructed from a pleated paper medium that is supported by a metal mesh or housing. These filters are simple to replace and valued for their high filtration efficiency and lightweight construction.
  • Gascolators: Resembling bowls made of glass or metal, gascolators are positioned at the lowest point of the fuel system where water and debris naturally settle. With this in mind, they are employed for fuel samples to give technicians the most accurate picture of overall system cleanliness. They typically include a fine mesh or screen to provide added particle filtration, as well as a drain valve that allows contaminants to be removed during preflight checks.
